Cheriton Light Festival 2018
All Souls Church, Cheriton, Folkestone.
Curated by Strange Cargo, Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th February, 6-9pm.
Cheriton Light Festival is an annual Winter festival set in Cheriton, Folkestone, the home of Strange Cargo. For the 2018 event, Kate had the idea to quickly make gold cubes and place them in a church to contrast the predominantly electronic lights used in the rest of the festival.
’Gathering | Souls’ was an analogue light installation inside All Souls Church, using gold leaf gilding onto wooden cubes of wood made from discarded plywood found in Cheriton. Each cube was positioned onto stands to reflect the candlelight.
Visitors needed to wait until their eyes adjusted to the darkness of the church interior to see the subtle effect of the 21ct gold surfaces being illuminated by candlelight.
The cubes were angled toward the alignment of the setting sun on that weekend.
Inside each cube is sealed a message to Kate’s recently departed dog, Miffy who died in January 2018.
